One of the most welcoming places on earth.
The local cuisine has been described as a tasty combination of Slavic and Latin dishes.
Trajan’s Bridge crosses the Lower Danube east of the Iron Gates, in the city of Drobeta- Turnu Severin. It was built by Apollodorus of Damascus, the architect of Trajan’s Column, between the spring of 103 and the spring of 105. The purpose behind its construction was to ease the passage of Roman troops led by emperor Trajan.
I’ve cycled parts of the Danube in Germany and Austria, but it exceeded my expectations in Serbia! This time, I was on a half-day river cruise instead of cycling. And I wasn’t just cruising the Danube, but also exploring the Roman Emperors Route, a certified European cultural route by the European Institute for Cultural Routes.
The modern Drobeta Turnu Severin was established only in the 19th century but the city’s history goes back to the time of Roman emperor Trajan. Fans of history and nature might want to add it to their travel list for its ancient and medieval landmarks and proximity to the beautiful Iron Gates nature park.
